Two years ago, Vesco Specialized Carriers, LLC., located in Conyers, Ga., retrofitted a few of its heavy-duty haulers with the T-RAC and saw immediate results on its 13-axle trailers. Vesco, which hauls freight, such as public transportation trains and large military vehicles, put the T-RAC through a serious stress test. Because of the demands of heavy duty hauling, Vesco's trailers carry around 50,000 pounds per axle - this is much higher than the average tractor trailer rig, which hauls around 20,000 pounds per axle.
The company continues to reap benefits with the T-RAC, and now two years later has retrofitted 20 of its 25 rigs with the T-RAC because of the initial success with the device. With 52 tires on each trailer at a cost of $600 per tire, Vesco is investing $31,200 per rig on tires alone. Before installing the T-RAC, Vesco haulers could only drive 100,000 to 150,000 before needing new tires. With the T-RAC, Vesco haulers now travel more than 200,000 miles before needing new tires, resulting in a 66 percent average increase in tire life.
"The biggest savings is with fuel cost. When you run with the exact recommended air pressure, you're driving long distances at the exact air pressure, and that saves you fuel money," said Larry Skinner, vice president of maintenance for Vesco. "We're the most extreme duty hauling trucking company you can have," Veal said. "We put the most extreme tests on these T-RACs. If they'll work for us, they'll work for anybody."
